Scoring with Ease

Golf Adept Game will score for up to 4 players - match, stroke and stableford - including handicaps and course index adjustment.

Bright Lights and Aging Eyes

Big news: Golf is played outside, in daylight and hopefully plenty of light. Problem is that the brighter the day the darker the sunglasses - and the harder it is to see a screen. Some phones have brighter screens than others - and a clamshell phone provides some natural shade. To help further, I have added large digit support to Golf Adept. You can display distance to the green is numbers three times as large as the screen can normally display. This also helps for those of us who do not have bifocals.

Small Screens

Game now recognises small screens and displays the information in pages. Golf Adept now works successfully on a Nokia 2760 with a 128x160 screen. This phone is available for under $80 so can be dedicated to Golf if you wish.

Updating Course Changes

The mobile software now caters for course changes. You can change the name, par and index for a hole as well as add or change landing zones and green locations. Changes are immediately available on the mobile as well as sent to the server for distribution and backup.

Golf Adept Game now displays the elapsed time you have been playing and estimates on when you will finish 9 or 18 holes.

Game Tests Complete

Golf Adept Game has proved simple to use and a valuable addition to play. Obviously distance to green is a great aid, but score entry is also much quicker than filling in a score card. It is great to see how you are going compared to your partners as you play.

My focus this month is on Golf Adept Game - a simple component that tells you the distance to the green and keeps score for you and your playing partners.

Beta Testing Phase 1 complete

The first on course testing was successful. A need for simpler data entry was noted and addressed. The second phase will start today as we look at generating reports.

Alpha Testing

Alpha testing is going from strength to strength. We are currently reviewing the phone interface to optimise the user experience. It is fun being a guinea pig. As it stands now when walking the course alone, using Golf Adept adds about 5 minutes to a 9 hole round. Walking with others or as passengers on a cart reduce this to next to nothing. This is because you can utilise the waiting time while others hit. Driving a cart while playing alone adds about 10 minutes per 9 holes because you shouldn't drive and operate a phone at the same time.

Nokia 6280 Version Running

At last Golf Adept is running on a real phone - not an emulator. The code now works on Nokia series 40 phones. The next challenge is to be able to integrate a bluetooth GPS.

Data Uploads Working

Any test requires data persistence at the server. During alpha testing we will save the data and provide a conduit to Google Calc for analysis.

J2ME Progressing Well

I am in the process of integrating Android changes to the J2ME Version. Almost done. Nokia will be the first hardware version - ready for alpha in August.

Static Site Ready - J2ME Next

The static Golf Adept site is complete for the moment. The J2ME release of the Golf Adept mobile software is just around the corner. It was working back in January before we moved on to the Android version. Now we have to port back all the improvements that will fit.

Content Management

Golf Adept now stores content in Google Sites for Content Management. Now we can have writers create content without requiring application deployment.

Live on Google App Engine

The move is complete. The Golf Adept static site is now running on Google App Engine. Currently only the static content - stay tuned for more functionality.

The move to Google App Engine

After all the plans to use Plone as the server side for Golf Adept, Google debut their App Engine project. The attractions of a managed service that is fast as well as reliable is too good to ignore. So, a move to Django was in order.

The Android Challenge
